Welcome to The Old Bakery Tea Rooms

General Info

Tucked away in a charming corner of Newark, The Old Bakery Tea Rooms offers a cozy escape that feels both traditional and refreshingly relaxed. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere sets the tone-warm, inviting, and perfect for a slow breakfast or a laid-back brunch.

The menu leans into classic tea house comfort, and it does so with confidence. One of the standout dishes I tried was the frittata-light, fluffy, and packed with flavor. It’s the kind of dish that feels homemade in the best way. If you’re visiting earlier in the day, the egg and bacon breakfast is a solid choice. It’s hearty without being overwhelming, making it ideal whether you’re starting your morning or easing into a weekend.

What really caught my attention, though, was the balance between simple ingredients and thoughtful preparation. The scrambled eggs & smoked salmon felt indulgent but not heavy, while the smoked bacon muffin delivered that satisfying savory bite that pairs perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee. Every dish on the menu seems designed to be comforting yet memorable, which is exactly what you want from a place like this.

In terms of service, everything runs smoothly. The onsite services are welcoming and efficient, and if you’re in a rush, takeout is available without sacrificing quality. It’s also convenient to see that delivery is an option, especially for those days when you want that tea room experience at home. Payments are hassle-free too, with both debit cards and credit cards accepted.

Location-wise, being set at 4 Queen’s Head Court gives it a slightly tucked-away feel, which adds to the charm. It’s the kind of place you might discover while exploring the area, and once you do, it quickly becomes a go-to spot. Reviews often highlight the friendly vibe and consistently good food, and after my visit, it’s easy to see why.

Overall, this tea house blends comfort, quality, and convenience in a way that feels genuine. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick breakfast muffin or settling in for a full meal, the experience feels personal and satisfying-exactly what a great local restaurant should offer.

What customers say?

“ Situated in a historical building this compact tearoom has plenty of character. It has two floors and you have to wait to be seated as it's very busy. The food was very tasty and there was a wide selection on the menu. The food was freshly cooked. Would definitely visit again! ”

“ Visited the tea rooms when the weather was scorching, so the outside seating was perfect. It is in a courtyard so sheltered from the wind and a nice little sun trap. The food was nice, and good sized portions. Waiting staff were lovely and really helpful. Only faults were the drinks were a little pricey for what they were and the way management were talking to and treating their staff was not great. Was embarrassing to hear them talk so rudely to their staff, and a bit uncomfortable to witness. ”

- Amy Robinson -

“ What an amazing gem! We came for tea, coffee, and cakes and it was a beautiful historic atmosphere (especially upstairs), great service, and really large portions of both cakes and tea. Very lovely spot. ”

- Becky T -

“ A beautiful old building, delicious coffee (we'll have tea another day), delightful food and home baked cakes and scones! My smoked salmon pasta was delicious. ”

- Lesley Greyling -

“ I visited the old bakery on a busy Saturday, and had a great experience. I had the frittata, my daughter had the grilled cheese brioche and my friend had a bacon sandwich, finished off by a slice of freshly baked chocolate cake each (DELICIOUS). You can tell everything is freshly made each day with quality ingredients. This was our first visit but can’t wait to come back again! ”

- Lily Hampson -

“ I've eaten here twice and both times the food was delicious, good tea, and the service was fast and friendly. The prices are reasonable. The location is great but the outside seating is a bit uncomfortable. The menu has a good selection of food and drinks including some vegetarian dishes but no vegan options. Inside there's a good selection of cakes which all look delicious. ”

“ 4 star for pretty, service and location. Shame it’s not clotted cream to go with scones and jam. But it’s worth the sit down here to enjoy its charm and watch the world go by as it over looks the market square. ”

“ The Old Bakery is a lovely building full of history and character. It’s a very popular place so you can often be waiting for a table. However we have been lucky a few times to have breakfast and lunches. The breakfasts use a lovely thick cut bread. The staff are always friendly and give service with a smile. ”
